Lighting Retrofit Case Study

Alcon Case Study

Alcon, a global leader in vision care, set eyes on increasing visibility in its facility and put a lid on high energy costs with new LED lighting.

Alcon

The Opportunity

Over the last 70 years, Alcon has been dedicated to helping people see brilliantly and transforming how eye diseases are treated worldwide. Its corporate mission is to enhance quality of life by helping people see better. Ironically, employees had poor visibility in their facility due to inadequate lighting. To honor its mission, Alcon set goals to improve visibility in its warehouse, enhance safety, and improve energy efficiency.

Over many years, existing T5 high-output fluorescent fixtures have been the subject of a maintenance headache. Employees spent significant time replacing ballasts or lamps that had gone entirely out, which can be overwhelming considering the facility covers four city blocks. More importantly, light levels were inconsistent, with certain areas only reading 10-15 footcandles where employees worked on essential tasks. The team at Alcon turned to US LED to update the lighting with its ultra-long-life LED solutions for improved illumination and increased energy savings.

Alcon

The Solution

Alcon began considering new LED lighting for its facilities years ago and evaluated several manufacturers and installation companies. After much consideration, they concluded that partnering with US LED would fit their lighting needs and financial requirements. US LED developed a solution that could be deployed quickly and did not interrupt operations.

After generating new photometric layouts, the large-scale project would replace 550 T5 high-output fluorescent fixtures with only 300 US LED ExsaBay® LED High Bay luminaires. The ExsaBay® is a scalable, high bay lighting solution designed specifically for large mounting heights and offers multiple optical distributions for specific areas like aisles in between racking. Not only did visibility improve in the facility, but the overall number of luminaires decreased, with some aisles only needing three luminaires each.

The Benefits

Alcon has been pleased with the positive feedback from employees and is even more excited that they no longer have to worry about constantly replacing fluorescent lamps and ballasts in the facility. Before the new lighting, plant operations would have to be halted entirely to deal with the outages, which cost time and money.

In addition to eliminating maintenance, Alcon is enjoying the immediate financial impact on energy conservation in the warehouse. They’ve reduced their energy usage by over 55%, and when combined with their maintenance savings, amount to over $66,000 annually. With some areas now reaching 40 footcandles, employees have been able to complete their tasks more effectively and be more productive overall. Alcon will enjoy issue-free lighting for many years with new ultra-long-life LED lighting backed by US LED’s Ten-Year Warranty.
